Johnstown couple note 50th date

JOHNSTOWN — Susan Kalcik and Nick Bocher of Johnstown have noted their 50th wedding anniversary with friends and family at Numero Uno Restaurant.

Susan was born in Cleveland, Ohio (her mother was born in Marsteller), and Nick was born in Brooklyn, N.Y.  

They were married July 27, 1963, in Brooklyn, N.Y.

They met as undergraduates at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where they also received master’s degrees, Susan in English and Nick in sociology-anthropology.  

After teaching at Miami and Western Illinois University, they did graduate work at the University of Texas at Austin, Susan in folklore and Nick in special education.

Susan worked at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., for 15 years and Nick taught special

education and was a computer consultant for various private and government agencies. Susan came to Pennsylvania to work with America’s Industrial Heritage Project, and later they both worked for the

Cambria County Community College (now Pennsylvania Highlands) until their retirement.

The couple have worked with or volunteered for the Slovak Heritage Association of the Laurel Highlands, Bottle Works Ethnic Arts Center, Community Arts Center of Cambria County, Johnstown Folk Dancers, John Paul II Manor, American Carpatho-Russian Diocese, Christ the Saviour Cathedral, St. Sophia Orthodox Christian Academy, Sisters of SS. Cyril & Methodius and Johnstown Camera Club.  

Susan is a member of the American Folklore Society and has served on its executive board, and has served with the Pennsylvania Arts Council.

Currently, Nick focuses on playing classical guitar and photography and Susan is working on a book about Slovaks in Pennsylvania.
