Zipfels observe golden date

JOHNSTOWN — Mr. and Mrs. Richard J. Zipfel of Hooversville have observed their 50th wedding anniversary by taking a cruise to Bermuda and also a surprise party with family and friends at Laurel View Village conference room, hosted by their sons and Mrs. Zipfel’s sister, Marilyn Goff, and brother-in-law, Phillip.

Mr. Zipfel and the former Carol Weaver were married Nov. 2, 1963, at Berkey Church of the Brethren by the late Rev. Millard Weaver.

Mrs. Zipfel is a graduate of  Windber Area High School and worked at Bestform in Windber.

After graduating from Forbes High School, Mr. Zipfel served three years in the Army on active duty and 20 years in the Army National Guard.

He worked for 31 years at PBSā€ˆCoals Inc. and six years at SCI-Laurel Highlands in Somerset.

Mr. Zipfel is serving as the 24th District commander of the American Legion and

Post 257 adjutant in Stoystown and Somerset County adjutant. He also is serving with the Somerset County Honor Guard.

The Zipfels are members of Berkey Church of the Brethren, where Mr. Zipfel serves as usher.

Mrs. Zipfel sings in the choir and is an assistant pianist. She was secretary of the women’s fellowship for many years.

She serves on the music and worship commission and served as a deacon for six years.

She helps cook funeral dinners and also volunteers at the Church of the Brethren Home.

They are the parents of two sons, Rich of Middleburg, Va., and Bill of Hooversville.
