UPDATE – Crash victim's identity, details released

JOHNSTOWN — A 16-year-old Conemaugh Valley High School sophomore was killed late Sunday when the pickup truck driven by his father crashed along Route 271 in East Taylor Township.

Brian Roles Jr. was ejected from the truck and pronounced dead at the scene following the 10:52 p.m. one-vehicle accident on Sunday, said Jeffrey Lees, chief deputy coroner for Cambria County.

The 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Brian Roles Sr. of East Taylor Township left the highway while traveling northbound on Route 271, Lees said. The truck continued up and embankment, struck a utility pole and rolled over.

“Mr. Roles (Jr.), who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle,” Lees said.

His father and another teen-aged passenger were taken to Memorial Medical Center following the wreck. Both were treated and released by the hospital, Lees said.

Grief counselors will be at Conemaugh Valley High School on Tuesday to work with students or teachers, he said.

An autopsy confirmed Brian Roles Jr. died of head and neck injuries caused by blunt force trauma sustained in the accident, Lees said. The manner of death is listed as accidental.

East Taylor Township police are continuing the investigation, with help from state police.

“A state police accident reconstructionist is assisting with the investigation to try to piece together what occurred,” Lees said.
