Altoona Hotel destroyed in early-morning blaze

ALTOONA — Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed a 110-year-old hotel and restaurant in Altoona.

The fire was reported about 2:10 a.m. at the Altoona Hotel.

The building opened as housing for supervisors of the South Altoona Foundry in the early 1900s. It continued operating as a 30-room hotel with a restaurant and bar until the fire gutted the building.

Owner Bjorn Reed issued a statement saying he's "deeply saddened to see such a wonderful landmark disappear" and asked people to "keep our staff in your thoughts during this very difficult time."

The roof of the building collapsed and safety issues will make it impossible to preserve the building's brick exterior.
