Gourmet popcorn shop opens on Franklin Street

JOHNSTOWN — A welcoming aroma of fresh-baked bread has wafted from 1073 Franklin St. for more than a decade.

Now, there is a hint of popcorn in the air, too.

Mingling together, they entice passers-by into the building, which has been home to Baker’s Loaf since 1996 and Johnstown Pops for the past month.

With hundreds of individuals walking past daily, coming and going from nearby Memorial Medical Center, the inviting scent is an effective sales tool.

“We do get a lot of foot traffic,” said Johnstown Pops manager Maigin Boring.

The popcorn comes in a variety of gourmet flavors from standards, such as caramel, to more exotic temptations, including jalapeno white cheddar.

“The newest favorite I think is the peanut butter chocolate,” said Denise Scaletta, who makes the fresh batches of popcorn daily.

Chris Martella, owner of Baker’s Loaf, decided to create Johnstown Pops in response to the growing interest in gourmet popcorn.

“People seem to really be picking up on the popcorn,” said Boring.

“They love trying the different flavors. We feature it with some of our sandwiches through the other business, and they really seem to be responding.”

Customers are not limited to purchasing popcorn in the shop, they also can visit the company website,, which features a link to a Johnstown Pops page.

Popcorn is sold by the bag and in three different sizes of tins: Small (1 gallon, one flavor), medium (2 gallons, two flavors) and large (3.5 gallons, three flavors).
