Westmont wrestlers advance out of District 6 duals
Some wrestling observers felt that Westmont Hilltop was lucky to get the No. 4 seed in the District 6 Dual-Meet Tournament.
The Hilltoppers are now “lucky” enough to be in the semifinals.
Martinazzi reaches scoring milestone, Lee five away as Bishop Carroll rolls past Cambria Heights
Brandon Martinazzi eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his career, netting 20 points in Bishop Carroll’s 69-22 victory over Cambria Heights.
His teammate Marcus Lee scored 34 points and came within five points of reaching the milestone himself.

Berlin puts five in final round to win Thomas tournament
Berlin Brothersvalley sent five wrestlers to championship matches Saturday at the Thomas Subaru Tournament at Bedford Area High School.
Even though the Mountaineers only had one champion – Joe Swank at 120 pounds – the round served as a victory lap of sorts with Berlin Brothersvalley easily outdistancing the field to take the team title with 205 points. Chestnut Ridge followed with 156 points.

Central wins wrestling team title
Progress was measured in assorted capacities at the Thomas Buick/GMC Wrestling Tournament at Richland High School.
In the case of Cambria Heights coach Mike Eckenrode, the tournament yielded two champions – Levi Niebauer at 160 pounds and Aaron Gill at 285 – and a second-place finish out of the 16 teams at the tournament.

Westmont, Cambria Heights dropping to Class A for football
Cambria Heights and Westmont Hilltop will play down one classification the next two football seasons, but representatives of each program believe winning in the the always tough Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference remains the key to success regardless of class.
“You still have to win games,” Westmont Hilltop Athletic Director Tom Callihan said. “It’s a double-edged sword. You have to win playing against schools that are much larger than us. But if we win, we get the bonus points.”
