Keydets clobber Red Flash

LEXINGTON, Va.
For The Tribune-Democrat

St. Francis had no answers for Virginia Military Institute’s triple-threat option on Saturday as the Keydets crushed the Red Flash 49-0.

VMI (1-0) ran for 418 yards and St. Francis was shut out for the first time since a 48-0 loss on Oct. 21, 2006, at Albany.

Tim Maypray, who led VMI with 116 rushing yards, scored on the first drive of the game on a 52-yard run. All four of the Keydets first-half touchdowns were on runs of 45 yards or more, including a 46-yard fumble return by Alexander Damiso.

VMI led 28-0 at the half.

The Red Flash moved the ball, advancing to the VMI 38-yard line on their first drive and to the 23 on their second drive, but were unable to score.

VMI slotback Zach Collins scored on a 62 yard run to make it 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Collins scored again in the second quarter when he sprinted down the left sideline for a 50-yard touchdown. He had two carries for 112 yards and two touchdowns.

Maypray’s 35-yard touchdown run in the third made it 35-0.

The Keydets, who threw only seven passes in the game, scored on an 8-yard pass from Kyle Hughes to Travis Ludden to make it 42-0.

St. Francis fumbled the ensuing kickoff, leading to Howard Abegesah’s 1-yard run.

The Red Flash’s best scoring chance came in the fourth, when they reached the VMI 13 before turning the ball over on downs.

Quarterback George Little went 23-for-45 for 256 yards with an interception, but the Red Flash had minus-4 yards rushing.

Antoine Rivera led the Red Flash with six catches for 88 yards and is now two receptions short of 100 in his Red Flash career.

He is tied for fourth place on the all-time list.

Omar Winston added a career-high six receptions for 82 yards.
