St. Francis wins NEC quarterfinal

Smithfield, R.I. — Ronnie Drinnon hit a go-ahead basket and a pair of free throws in the final 48 seconds, scoring a career high 20 points as sixth-seeded St. Francis battled past third-seeded Bryant 55-54 in the Northeast Conference tournament Wednesday night.

St. Francis hasn’t been in the playoffs since the 2010-11 season and scrapped past Bryant (18-14) in a closely fought contest that saw five ties and five lead changes – three in the final 3:37.

Bryant was up 50-48 at the final media timeout, but Dominique Major came out of the huddle for St. Francis with a 3-pointer.

Drinnon hit a layup with 43 seconds left for a 53-52 lead, was fouled rebounding his own missed free throw and sank both for a 55-52 margin. St. Francis outrebounded Bryant 34-25.

Dyami Starks led Bryant with 19 points.

The Red Flash (10-20) advance to a Saturday semifinal at top-seeded Robert Morris.

The Colonials defeated eighth-seeded Fairleigh Dickinson 60-53 Wednesday. Lucky Jones scored 19 points and Anthony Myers-Pate added 10 for the regular-season champions (20-12).

Robert Morris prevailed despite a scoreless night from conference player of the year Karvel Anderson, who came into the day averaging 19.6 points per game.

He sat out the final 8:37 with the Colonials leading 43-37. The Knights (10-21) didn’t get any closer, and trailed by 10 with a minute to go.

Sidney Sanders Jr. scored 16 points with Scooter Gillette adding 15 and Mathias Seilund 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Knights, who have lost 13 straight to Robert Morris. The Knights shot 36.4 percent and were just 3 of 17 from 3-point range (17.6 percent).
