Red team takes away win in St. Francis spring game

LORETTO — The Red team came away with a 27-14 victory over the White squad in Saturday’s St. Francis spring game at DeGol Field.

The game format saw two 40-minute periods each with a running clock, except on special team plays. After the first 40 minutes a two-minute drill was ran by both the Red and White teams.

Max Ward started the scoring for the White Team as he connected with William Martin for a 19-yard touchdown with 10 minutes to play in the opening half. Lance Geesey made the extra point to give White a 7-0 lead.

Geesey then hit a 39-yard field goal for Red as regulation in the first half expired. Kadarrius Campbell  scored on a 5-yard touchdown during the extra two-minute possession to give Red its first lead game at 10-7.

In the second half, Ward hit Matt Valenzuela for a 54-yard score to regain the lead for White at 14-10.

Campbell then broke free for a 69-yard run for the Red team to set up a 28-yard Geesey field goal. The Red team trailed by just one – 14-13 – with less than 20 minutes to play.

Zack Drayer found Terell Smith for a 6-yard score with 13:15 to go and gave the lead back to Red at 20-14 after  Geesey’s extra point.

Capri Thompson then found Smith 3 minutes later – this time on a 70-yard strike – and Red made it a 27-14 lead, setting the final.

William Martin finished with five receptions to lead the White team, while Dylan Bear added six tackles on the defensive side.
