Point Park sweeps UPJ
Visiting Point Park handed Pitt-Johnstown a 25-21, 25-16, 25-16 non-conference loss on Tuesday at the UPJ Sports Center. Kelsey Shanabrook had six kills to lead Pitt-Johnstown, now 13-7 on the season. With the sweep, Point Park raised its season record to 23-6.
Danielle Fleeger, Karen Schmidt, and Beth Kendera eachhad five kills. Schmidt and Kendera also added a block assist apiece.
Kayla Petrilla (13 assists) and Nikki Oakes (11 assists) combined for 24 set assists, while Kelsey Kohler finished with a team-best 22 digs.
Mount Aloysius notches victory
CRESSON - Mount Aloysius defeated Shenandoah 3-0 in a non-conference match-up, as part of a campus-wide Pink Out event for breast cancer awareness.
Chelsea Perehinec led Mount Aloysius with 14 digs, while Leland Espinoza recorded a game-high 11 kills. Lauren Oldham added 34 assists.
Mount Aloysius will travel to Pitt-Johnstown on Thursday, before closing out its regular season on Saturday at Medaille College.
Westmont out of state tourney
ALTOONA – District 3 representative Berks Catholic advanced to the quarterfinals of the PIAA Class AA tournament with a 5-0 sweep of Westmont Hilltop at Leopold Rec Center.
The Hilltoppers, champions of the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference and District 6, finish their season at 17-2.
The Saints (18-3) picked up singles wins from Mariah Wardius, Lin Robertson and Spenser Corson with the duos of Andi Eways and Lauren Firely, and Tara Heummrich and Meg Lilley securing victories in doubles play.
Wardius topped Hannah Gleason 6-2, 6-1 with Robertson and Corson each taking 6-0, 6-0 wins over Bethany Carney and Ashley Kush respectively.
The Eways-Firely combo defeated Nicole Barnhart and Ellie Kane 6-1, 6-1 while Heummrich and Lilley dropped Seneca Koontz and Corrin Claycomb 6-0, 6-1.
