UPJ men eighth in WVIAC poll
The Pitt-Johnstown men earned 128 points and were been picked to finish eighth by the coaches in the WVIAC preseason poll. The coaches picked West Liberty as the favorite for a fourth straight conference title.
Pitt-Johnstown boasts some potent offensive weapons, headed by senior first-team all-conference selection Nick Novak, who led the team in both scoring and assists (114), and senior guard Jordan Miller (15.3 points per game), while junior forward Bill Luther (7.6 ppg) shot nearly 50 percent from the field.
Lady Cats picked eighth
The Pitt-Johnstown women were picked to finish eighth by WVIAC coaches in their preseason poll.
Fairmont State was chosen the preseason favorite.
The Lady Cats have a talented and experienced team, led by first-team All-WVIAC guard, and last year’s conference freshman of the year, Kaitlynn Fratz (17.2 ppg). Joining the stellar sophomore are two other second-year players, Nicole Carman and Kelsey Sleighter, who hit nearly 40 percent of her 3-point tries a year ago.
Mount men sixth in AMCC
The AMCC men's basketball coaches have chosen Mount Aloysius to finish sixth in their preseason poll.
Coach Lance Loya, now entering his 10th season, returns four starters from last year and a considerably more experienced roster.
Mount Aloysius will open Nov. 16 against Penn State-Altoona in the Juniata College Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.
Ladie Mounties chosen fourth
The Mount Aloysius women were picked to finish fourth in the AMCC preseason coaches poll.
The Lady Mounties went 15-12 last season and advanced to the conference semifinals in coach Kristi Kaack’s first year at the helm.
Defending champion La Roche was picked to finish first.
Mount Aloysius will open on Nov. 16 at the Muhlenberg College tournament.
St. Francis back in title match
LORETTO – The top-seeded St. Francis women downed No. 4 seed Sacred Heart 2-0 at DeGol Field on Friday to earn a berth in the Northeast Conference Championship.
The Red Flash posted its second-ever NEC tournament victory despite advancing in four of its past five league playoff games. St. Francis will meet third-seeded LIU Brooklyn in the championship bout.
The Blackbirds upset no. 2 seeded Monmouth 1-0 in the day's second match.
