READERS' FORUM 5/5 | White-water visionaries did marvelous job

The annual Benscreek Canoe Club’s Stonycreek River Rendezvous was held the last weekend in April, with visitors from throughout the eastern United States gathering at Greenhouse Park in Tire Hill.

The big difference this year from past years was the opportunity for kayakers to use the recently completed Stonycreek Whitewater Park.

Whitewater Park is truly a marvelous project. Kayakers were playing in the waves from 7 a.m. until after midnight, several days running.

And it was especially exciting to witness hundreds of people sitting on the boulders along the river, watching the action.

The whole scene was very exciting – the boulders, the crowds, the kayakers in the river. This scene is exactly why Whitewater Park was constructed ... there is something for everyone to experience.

I talked to spectators who are considering taking up the sport, and I talked to parents who were pleased to have such a healthy activity that their kids love.

I’m looking forward to the future construction of the spectator bridge over Whitewater Park and the construction of the Whitewater Release Project at the Quemahoning Reservoir next year.

I congratulate all of those with the vision to see the potential of using our natural resources to enhance our region.
