Paying tribute to veterans
Ceremony will honor service during WWII
THE TRIBUNE-DEMOCRAT
More than 1,000 veterans of the Second World War will attend a ceremony today at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena.
They will bring to this event 1,000 different stories from that conflict.
Some still carry physical reminders of the battlefields and seas of Europe, Asia and North Africa.
They all bear invisible scars – memories of bloodshed and fallen brothers.
We now add our voice to the chorus of those honoring these heroes for their service.
Each will receive a citation and a medal, noting their dedication to and sacrifice for their country.
They will share in music from the World War II era and hear the anthems of each branch of the military.
Speakers will laud their service.
They will share this special day in a building that is dedicated to preserving our region’s legacy of military service. Cambria County War Memorial Arena is a permanent monument to the dedication and service of the men and women of this area – in various wars.
And today, old friends will be reacquainted, stories will be shared.
Many will recall fellow soldiers and sailors who are no longer with us – lost to the rages of battle, or to the years since.
There will be tears. And smiles. And many moments of reflection.
What a fitting tribute to those who gave so much.
To the many World War II veterans who make their way to the War Memorial today, and to those unable to be there, we simply say:
Thank you, and God bless you all.
