Oakhurst cameras a good idea too late

JOHNSTOWN — Oakhurst Homes will be adding more security cameras to the complex, the Johnstown Housing Authority said this week.

That’s the good news.

The bad news is that it will be too late to capture the video of 27-year-old Jareek Adams being gunned down there last weekend. Perhaps if the authority had acted faster it would be easier for Adams’ killer to be prosecuted. Better yet, if there were more than two cameras at Oakhurst Homes, perhaps they would act as a deterrent and help prevent such brazen criminal acts.

Additional security cameras have been purchased and wiring is in place, but winter weather has prevented them from being installed, according to Daniel J. Kanuch, the authority’s executive director.

“If we can tie them into the police system, that might be more of a deterrent,” Vice Chairman Joseph Taranto said.

We certainly hope so. We just wish it would have been done sooner.
