Readers' Forum 3 26 | Organization steps up to help animals

JOHNSTOWN — We are starting a movement – a movement that will protect the animals in our area.

Recently, Ruth Cummings, a former shelter director/humane officer, wrote to the Readers’ Forum on Feb. 14, (“Humane society criticized; leader responds,”) with concerns for the welfare of animals in Cambria County, particularly in light of the recent animal-cruelty acts caught on video. She is not alone. Many are outraged by the declining care of animals in our area and question the effectiveness of local services.

I often wondered why someone wasn’t doing something. Then I realized, “I’m someone. I’ll do something.” It took one individual to start the process, but now we’re in the midst of something big. With an established board of director’s, 501(3) status and a working strategic plan, PAWS House is doing something.

Our goals? Bring in a humane officer and create an Animal Resource Center and Sanctuary (ARCS) in Cambria County. All funds raised from ARCS will go directly into an all-inclusive safe haven, where every animal that enters our facility will be cared for and loved for the remainder of its life.

Let us teach our children and neighbors to love all creatures, big and small. Let us provide opportunities for owners and their pets to enjoy our area. Let us step up and do something together.

PAWS House was created by the community, for the community and we will continue to dream big. Learn more about our efforts at

Can’t work with public, then leave

I'm writing this letter as a direct shot at the councilman who called us idiots at the latest city council meeting. You want to resort to name calling because you can’t deal with the anger of your constituents that you helped incite?

We elected you and the others to office to represent us, not work against us. Can’t deal with that? Leave. We have every right to be livid regarding being forcibly fleeced and having to spend thousands because of pressure testing that is not required by the DEP, because Steve Sewalk says so. Because he’s apparently the supreme authority that council hides behind.

The EADS Group is not the end all be all of opinions. We are eventually going to stop this war machine. How? We are going to remove officials like you, either by voting you out in the next election or via recall.

I and thousands of proud residents like me pay taxes and bust our tails to raise our families and enjoy a decent quality of life despite the constant obstacles you throw in our direction. There is a term here and it’s called malfeasance of duty. And I, for one, along with the thousands of other taxpayers, am done putting up with it. It’s time to go. Resign. And make sure the door doesn’t hit you too hard. The party’s over.
