Opening more doors for females

JOHNSTOWN — Females have made strides in many professions over the past few decades, but there are still some that are dominated by males.

A workshop set for next month in Richland Township is looking to change the makeup of some of those fields. “Girls Tech Over!” will offer a chance for fifth- and sixth-grade girls to do hands-on activities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics – collectively known as STEM – with the objective of encouraging girls to pursue those types of professions.

“There are so few women in these types of careers, and girls don’t often get to meet women who are engineers, biologists, environmentalists, chemists or forensic scientists,” said Deanna Hadle of the American Association of University Women.

The group’s Johnstown branch is working in collaboration with Pennsylvania Highlands Community College to present the one-day workship on Oct. 26.

We encourage parents to let their daughters know about the event, which is free and includes lunch. It’s a great opportunity to open a door for her that she might not even know exists.
