Westmont Hilltop aces another school-tax test

JOHNSTOWN — It’s beginning to become a familiar refrain around here: Westmont Hilltop’s school board is not raising taxes.

Yes, you read that right. The school that had developed a reputation for raising taxes every year has held the line once again. That’s three years in a row, if you’re counting. And if you live in the Westmont Hilltop School District, we’re guessing that you are counting. Who wouldn’t be after 24 consecutive years of tax increases?

So kudos to Westmont Hilltop, which has again found a way to make do with what it has.

The movement to stem the tide of tax increases started a few years ago with Cost Effective Approaches Supporting Education (CEASE). The citizens group wanted to protect the educational system in the district but without annual tax hikes.

While there have been some tense moments over the years regarding school funding, it appears as though the group and its supporters have made a significant impact for Westmont-area homeowners.
