Readers' Forum 2-8 | Smoking, nonsmoking an individual's choice

JOHNSTOWN — I’m writing in response to several letters in the Readers’ Forum about smoking in VFWs. I’ve been playing/singing acoustic guitar for many years as a hobby and decided to start playing publicly in the local area about 15 years ago.

I have played at the VFW in Geistown and at the Windber Moose, which also is a private club that allows smoking except between 5 to 8 p.m. during suppertime.

I smoked for about five years in my late teens and early 20s but quit cold turkey. Personally, I’m glad I did. I have friends, smokers and nonsmokers, but I don’t judge them because it’s their choice to smoke or not.

The bottom line is that it’s good to have options and you can choose to go into a smoking bar or nonsmoking bar. But one thing’s for sure, my hat’s off to all the veterans who fought for our freedom. Not all of them smoked, but if some did, so be it.

Lee Greenwood’s song “God Bless the U.S.A.” sums it up: “I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free; and I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.

“And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today, cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land ... God bless the U.S.A.”

Salute to soldier was best part of speech

The State of the Union speech was a continuation of President Obama’s lies. He said that energy prices are the lowest they have ever been. Propane prices have increased over 100 percent. Gasoline prices are up.

What we need are jobs. Not jobs that have been downsized to a 30-hour workweek due to Obamacare regulations. His Environmental Protection Agency regulations are killing coal-mining jobs. And there’s still no Keystone XL pipeline yet. Obama claims he is still studying it. Really? This project could create 40,000 jobs and provide 830,000 barrels a day of North American crude oil into U.S. refineries.

Pipelines are the safest way to transport oil. The Keystone project would amount to a 43 percent reduction in overseas crude imports and lower gas prices.

What about the millions who have lost their health care coverage? What about those who can’t keep their doctors?

Obama took an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States, and now he wants to disregard it by using a pen and his phone. Let’s see if anyone in Congress will call him on this.

Obama is standing in the center of subzero temperatures and says global warming is for real.

The best and most honorable part of watching the speech was the 11⁄2-minute  standing ovation given to the young soldier for his service to our country.

The jury is in on Obamacare: Guilty of lies in the first degree.
