New leadership for St. Francis

JOHNSTOWN — It took a little longer than expected, but St. Francis University in Loretto has found its next president.

The university announced last week that the Rev. Malachi Van Tassell will succeed the Rev. Gabriel Zeis in leading the school. Zeis originally planned to end his 10-year term earlier this year but he agreed to stay on a year longer to help with a transition in the Franciscan hierarchy.

Van Tassell has spent the past 11 years at St. Francis, where he is an adjunct assistant professor of accounting.

“It was clear to us that Father Malachi’s familiarity with the university’s mission, vision and core values, as well as his background as an educator/

professor and administrator will serve our institution well,” said Larry Giannone, vice chairman of the university’s board of trustees.

We wish Van Tassell well in his new role. St. Francis, which recently was ranked as one of the top colleges in the North Regional Universities category by U.S. News & World Report, is a tremendous asset to our region. We hope that under Van Tassell’s stewardship it will continue to be a place for educational and spiritual enlightenment.
