Thank you to the approximately 200 volunteers who donated hundreds of hours in support of this year’s Thunder in the Valley.
These amazing individuals not only gave of their time in service to the rally, but they also extended outstanding hospitality to our many visitors during what was perhaps our best-attended event.
I have received many complimentary phone calls following Thunder from our out-of-town guests. And I know from my own experience in working with our volunteers that they truly put our community’s best foot forward as they guided and directed rally-goers around Johnstown and to our area’s many attractions and points of interest.
After our guests leave, they will remember their visit to the Johnstown area and the many volunteers who made them feel welcome.
We look forward to working with all of our wonderful volunteers again next year, and encourage newcomers to join us.

Out-of-town visitor: Johnstown is a mess
On our way back to New York from Chicago, my husband and I stopped to sightsee in Johnstown. I had read the book about the flood and wanted to see for myself what the area looked like. We were amazed with the museum and the Inclined Plane. We loved the old cottages near the South Fork Dam. I walked in the old lake bed.
The tourist part of Johnstown and surrounding areas was wonderful. Now, for the not-so-great part. We drove around town for a couple of hours on July 6 trying to get a feel for the townspeople and how they live. It was very sad to see so many dilapidated neighborhoods. The homes are falling apart and folks looked like they don’t have a dime to their names. I cannot imagine feeling safe there or wanting to live there.
I think the politicians need to come up with a revitalization plan ASAP. Your history is important. So is your economy. I think a casino would be a great idea. It brings jobs and money to the area. Use it to improve conditions for your residents.
You should all be embarrassed and ashamed. Johnstown is a mess.
