Tonight’s First Friday event sponsored by the Village Row Shops in Moxham will highlight several nonprofit organizations.
First Friday is observed the first Friday of each month from April through October by the shops, which are situated on Village Street between Park and Grove avenues.
Each First Friday takes place between 6 and 9 p.m. A street carnival is the theme for tonight’s event.
Because the intention of First Friday is not only to create awareness of the shops, but to build community spirit and fellowship, organizers decided to reach out to nonprofit organizations to be a focal part of tonight’s activities.
The idea to highlight nonprofits was spearheaded by Rita Strand-quest of Tea Fancies and Ben Gallagher of Village Street Cafe.
As of midweek, 10 area non-profits had indicated their intentions to take part in tonight’s First Friday.
They are Anna L. Windolph Chapter 495 of the Order of the Eastern Star, Dale Valley Arts & Cultural Center, Epilepsy Foundation of Western Central Pennsylvania, Grove Avenue United Methodist Church, Moxham Crimewatch, Moxham Renaissance, Precious Life, St. Andrew’s School, The Learning Lamp and Windber Volunteer Fire Company.
Each agency will either hold a fundraiser or an awareness event, Strandquest said.
For instance, Grove Avenue United Methodist Church will hold a “Plaster the Pastor” event at which – for a fee – attendees will have an opportunity to toss whipped-cream pies at either the Rev. Ed Schoeneck or the Rev. Arnie McFarland. Proceeds will benefit the Nothing But Nets campaign.
Schoeneck is pastor of Grove Avenue United Methodist while McFarland is pastor of Christ United and Park Avenue United Methodist churches, both also in Moxham.
Tonight’s activities also include music by The Chi outside of Village Street Cafe, a Walk & Wag Pet Parade (registration at Hugs N Suds Dog Grooming closes at 6:45) and an appearance by Pat Holifield of The Hat Ladies Traveling Show.
Village Photo & Framing is sponsoring a display of art by Margaret Dohmen-Shipman.
Also on the program: Tea-leaf reading by fortune teller Lady Becca, a display of inspirational art by Allied Artists of Johnstown member Sandy Vigna, dried floral artistry by Allied Artists member Mary Bunk, sculpture display by Donna Logue, woodcrafts by Barbara Logue, quartz jewelry by Pat Kristoff and hemp necklaces and handmade silver and copper jewelry by Leah Strandquest.
There will be carnival games and food.
Proceeds will benefit the participating nonprofits.
