In brief | Deadline nearing for veggie recipe contest
The deadline to enter “Simply Delicious, Simply Nutritious,” a vegetable recipe contest using Pennsylvania-grown vegetables, is June 30.
The recipes of 16 finalists will be selected to be prepared at a cook-off tentatively scheduled for Aug. 1 in the Harrisburg area.
Four recipes will be chosen in each of these four categories: Tomatoes/peppers/eggplant; melons/cucumbers; summer squash; and winter squash/pumpkin.
Recipes must contain at least one of the vegetables as a major ingredient.
A $100 prize will be awarded to the winner in each category.
Submit entries by e-mailing to pvmrp@embarqmail.com.
They also may be faxed to (717) 694-3596 or mailed to Pennsylvania Vegetable Marketing and Research Program, 815 Middle Road, Richfield, Pa. 17086-9205.
Entries should include the contestant’s name, mailing address, telephone number and e-mail address or fax number, if available, on one side of a sheet of plain, white paper.
The recipe should be printed on the other side.

Participants sought for lecture series
“Of the People, By the People and For the People,” a planned lecture series on the issues in the upcoming presidential election, will be presented from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays or 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturdays during September or October at the Windber Public Library, 1909 Graham Ave.
The library is looking for people interested in presenting and talking about election issues, including foreign policy, the economy, health care, the price of gas, peace, poverty and the presidential candidates.
