Success stories | Windber student in prestigious program

Jenelle Feather, daughter of Brett and Sally Feather of Windber, has participated in the prestigious Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh.
The five-week program for high school seniors provides enrichment experiences in the sciences and mathematics.
Blairsville graduate gets scholarship
Andrea McQueen, a graduate of Blairsville High School, has received a Presidential Scholarship from Asbury College, Wilmore, Ky.
Richland graduate receives scholarship
Lara Bicko, daughter of David and Michele Bicko of Johnstown, has been awarded a Dean’s Scholarship from Unity College in Maine.
The scholarship is given annually to students who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance with a dedication to community involvement.
Bicko plans to major in conservation law enforcement.
Johnstown grad attains dean’s list
LaVarr Stephens-Howling, a 2007 graduate of Greater Johnstown High School, has been named to the dean’s list at Slippery Rock University with a 3.8 grade- point average.
Stephens-Howling is majoring in resort recreation management and tourism and marketing.
He also received a certificate of volunteerism for taking notes for students with disabilities.
He is the son of Rodney and Stephanie Howling.
Local student in honor society
Brad Sladki, son of Bill and Linda Sladki of Johnstown, has been selected for membership in the National Junior Honor Society.
He is a sixth-grader at Johnstown Middle School.
Food-service manager gets culinary award
Joshua Bergman has received a Star Culinary Award in the senior division of Sodexo.
His award-winning recipe was Lobster Risotto.
Bergman, son of Bill Bergman of Johnstown, is a graduate of the IUP Academy of Culinary Arts.
He and his wife, the former Melissa Crum, live in Virginia Beach, Va., where he is food-service manager for Sodexo.
His wife attends Regent Law School.
Local Girl Scout earns Silver Award
Jamie Jaber, daughter of Ed and Sharon Jaber of Johnstown, has earned a Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest award in Cadette Girl Scouting.
Requirements are activities in skill building, leadership development, career exploration, self-development and service.
Jaber, a ninth-grader at Richland High School, has been a Girl Scout for 10 years.
Ligonier grad gets pharmacy degree
Lauren Teich has received a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine’s School of Pharmacy.
Teich, a 2001 graduate of Ligonier Valley High School, received a bachelor of science degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
She has accepted a position in Atlanta.
She is the daughter of Mark and Belinda Teich of Ligonier and the granddaughter of Joseph and Patricia Solarchick of Greensburg and the late George and Martha Teich.
Area students win poetry awards
The following Ligonier Valley Middle School students have been honored at the Ligonier Valley Writers’ 17th annual Student Poetry Awards ceremony:
Rachel Matyi, third place, Paul Spencer Poetry Award for rhymed verse.
Phebe Cornell, first place, and Zach Ferry, third place, Chestnut Ridge Literary Award for unrhymed verse.
Jenna Collins, first place, and Ashley Smith, third place, Appleseed Award for haiku.
Megan Z. Crowley, first place, and Brittany Z. Crowley, second place, Highview Farm Award for traditional verse.
Abby Sistek, third place, Shirey Poetry Award for free verse.
Jackson R. Lazor, first place, Anita Grillo Award for light humorous verse.
