There are no strangers when it comes to Ebensburg welcoming folks to its annual homecoming celebration.
This year’s observance begins at 8 a.m. Saturday with the popular community yard sale, which is the prelude to a day filled with activities and fun.
Christine Strugala, the borough’s community development director, has seen the event grow each year since she joined the borough in 2004.
“There were 53 yard sales listed on the map last year, so to make it more manageable, only the first 50 to register will be placed on this year’s handout,” Strugala said. “We decided to open it up and allow anyone with an Ebensburg address to participate.”
Ebensburg Homecoming was started in the summer of 2000 for the Ebensburg Bicentennial celebration.
Every July since, the community gets together to celebrate the summer months and welcome former Ebensburg residents home.
“While this is a homecoming for those who once resided here or still do, it’s also a way to make other visitors feel like they can make Ebensburg their home for a day,” Strugala said.
In addition to the yard sales, the celebration also includes a farmer’s market, quilt show, 5K race and duathlon, book sale, fishing derby, golf outing, church dinner, children’s games and live music.
“Central Cambria High School is sponsoring a first-ever duathlon, which has participants running the Ghost Town Trail for two miles, mountain biking for eight miles and then running a final leg of two miles,” Strugala said.
Food vendors will be on hand selling items such as pizza, candy apples and ice cream.
In the evening, the activities take place around Lake Rowena, a 13-acre reservoir.
From 8 to 11 p.m., the eight-member Flood City Brass Band will be at a pavilion at the lake to perform rock, funk, R&B and pop music.
“At dusk, we will have one of the best fireworks displays in the region because they explode right over the lake and reflect off the water,” Strugala said.
“People are invited to bring blankets and lawn chairs to make themselves comfortable for the evening’s activities.”
