RELIGION IN BRIEF | Somerset church names spiritual leader

Jim Hinton has been appointed spiritual leader of Somerset Church of Christ.

He replaces Ron Longwell who returned to Texas to pursue a doctorate degree.

Hinton received a bachelor’s degree in Bible and religion from Harding University in 2001 and earned a master of divinity degree from Harding University Graduate School of Religion in 2007. He also received the Jack P. Lewis Ministry of Study award.

Hinton grew up in Shanksville.

Bible study begins at 10 a.m. Sundays, followed by a service at 10:45.

Way of Hope to hold outdoor service

Way of Hope Christian Fellowship will celebrate its second annual outdoor worship and picnic Sunday at Quemahoning Recreation Park.

Praise music will be led by Christina Rummel and the praise team.

A baptismal service will begin the 10 a.m. worship service.

A covered-dish dinner willl follow.

Jennerstown UM to host ensemble

Seasoned Grace, a musical ensemble, will perform during the 10 a.m. Sunday service at Jennerstown United Methodist Church, 1673 E. Pitt St.

A love offering will be taken to support the ministry.

Mount Sinai to note Women’s Day

Mount Sinai Institutional Baptist Church, 111 Cambria Ave., Johnstown, will celebrate Women’s Day during the 10:50 a.m. Sunday worship service.

The Rev. Arlene C. Williams, associate pastor of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, will preach.

All women are asked to wear white.

Wesley UM to host musical program

Wesley United Methodist Church will host a program of music, hymn singing, testimony and fellowship at 7 p.m. Sunday at the church, Main and Church streets, South Fork.

Loreen Link will be the singing artist.

Churches schedule vacation Bible schools

The following churches will hold vacation Bible schools:

Recitals continue at First Lutheran

Joe Gaunt will be the featured artist at noon Tuesday during the July Recital Series at First Lutheran Church, 415 Vine St., downtown Johnstown. He will play the piano.

A light luncheon will follow the recital.

Labyrinth walk Wednesday in Windber

A guided labyrinth walk, a sacred walk on a symbolic path which leads to a place of inner healing, will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the lower labyrinth on Cambria Avenue at Windber Medical Center.

The labyrinth, composed of geometric patterns found in nature, transcends religion, geography, cultures and history.

Parish celebrating reappointments

Bright Hope Parish of the United Methodist Church will hold a Swiss steak dinner at 6 p.m. Thursday at Nanty Glo United Methodist Church, 998 Lloyd St., to celebrate the reappointments of the Rev. John Snyder and the Rev. Tom Budner.

The pastors were reappointed during the United Methodist annual conference.

A program will follow the dinner.

Donations needed for Saturday’s Kitchen

Saturday’s Kitchen, a group of more than 30 interdenominational churches in the Greater Johnstown area, is initiating a program titled “Christmas in July.”

The group is responsible for serving meals on Saturdays and Sundays at The Family Kitchen, 231 Bedford St., downtown Johnstown.

Because of a decrease in federal funding to area food pantries, Saturday’s Kitchen is in need of financial support for its weekend programs at the Family Kitchen and the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank.

Checks should be made payable to Saturday’s Kitchen, P.O. Box 1133, Johnstown, Pa. 15907.

Saturday’s Kitchen also has a love tree set up for donations on the ground level of The Galleria, Richland Township.

Hours are 5 to 9 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.

Funds will be handled through the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies and will be dispersed as needed.
