82-year-old wins playwriting contest
Mountain Playhouse producer Teresa Stoughton Marafino has announced that 82-year-old William S.E. Coleman of Des Moines has won the 2008 Mountain Playhouse International Comedy Playwriting Contest with his entry, “One Golden Moment.”
The romantic comedy is set on a Greek island, where an American book editor, an island native and a free-spirited Austrian backpacker collide.
Coleman, who grew up near New Kensington, Westmoreland County, will receive the $3,000 cash prize and Grindstone Award at the playhouse on Sept. 6, when his play will be read by a professional cast.
Scripts for the 2009 contest are due by Dec. 31.

Christian event open to ministries, artwork
Registration is open for Harvest in the Park, an interdenominational Christian event that will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 13 at Windber Recreation Park.
The registration deadline for ministries and church groups is Aug. 16. Ministries may include dance, drama, praise teams, choirs, acoustic musicians, vocalists, puppets and children’s ministries.
Groups also may set up a tent to share information, but no money is to be exchanged.
The registration deadline for artwork done by Christians is Sept. 6. All media and forms including landscapes, portraits, children’s artwork, needlework, photography, writings and poems are acceptable.
Admission will be free. Baked-good donations are welcome.

Former area man creates flood CD
“Johnstown Flood 1889,” a CD by Michael J. Smajda of Harrisburg, is available for sale at bookstores at Johnstown Flood National Memorial, South Fork, and Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site, Cresson.
His CD is a verse version with sound effects.
Smajda, an author and poet, is formerly of the Morrellville section of Johnstown.
