Religion in brief | New pastor named to Calvary UM Church

JOHNSTOWN — Pastor Wendy Henderson will present her introductory sermon during the 10:45 a.m. Sunday service at Calvary United Methodist Church, 159 Chandler Ave., Johnstown.

Henderson is attending Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.

Contemporary service will begin at 8:30 a.m.

St. James celebrates Women’s Day

The seventh annual Women’s Day will be celebrated at Abundant Life Ministry, 707 Horner St., Johnstown, with the theme “Mind-set of the Victor.”

Evangelists Debra Bush and Lisa Graves will lead the 11 a.m. Sunday service.

Elder Lois Newton of Emmaus Deliverance Church in Pittsburgh will be the messenger for the 4:30 p.m. service.

Adult Bible study forming at Westmont

An adult Bible study will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Westmont Church of the Brethren, 2301 Sunshine Ave., Johnstown.

Seminar to focus on Trappist monk

Mount Aloysius College’s Ecumenical Studies Center will present a two-day seminar on Trappist Monk Thomas Merton on Thursday and Friday at the Cresson campus.

Bonnie Bowman Thurston will be the presenter.

“Thomas Merton, Modern Mystic” will be presented at 2:30 p.m., followed by reflective time at 4:30, dinner at 5:30 and a film at 7.

Friday will begin with breakfast at 8, “Thomas Merton on the Spiritual Life” at 9, lunch at noon, and the session continuing at 2 p.m.

Band to perform at Berkey Church

The Walking Roots Band will perform at 7 p.m. Friday at Berkey Church of the Brethren, 1038 Church Drive, Windber.

The group is a folk-bluegrass band based in Harrisonburg, Va., and band member Seth Thomas Crissman is a 2005 graduate of Johnstown Christian School.

Arbutus Church

The Rev. Ron Barto, guest minister, will deliver the message “Learning to Deal with Giants,” with Scripture from 1 Samuel 17:20-24 and 45-47, during the 9:15 a.m. Sunday worship service at Arbutus Church of the Brethren, 1201 Erickson Drive, Johnstown.

Belmont UM

The Rev. Keith A. Dunn will deliver the message “Travel Tips,” with Scripture from Luke 10:1-11, during the 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. Sunday worship services at Belmont United Methodist Church, 107 Coldren St., Johnstown.

Communion will be observed at both services.
