Women's Showcase booked for March 16 at downtown venue

JOHNSTOWN — Handbags, beauty and fitness products and stress relief – what more could a woman want?

The seventh annual Women’s Showcase and third annual Bagtastic Event and Basket Bash will be held from noon to 4 p.m. March 16 at Pasquerilla Conference Center, 301 Napoleon St. in downtown Johnstown.

“It’s a naturally evolving thing to put the two together,” said Mary Anne Rizzo, director of advertising sales at The Tribune-Democrat. “We want this to be a fun, interesting day.

“We’ve gotten local vendors who target women to participate.”

Last year, there were dance and exercise demonstrations, health screenings from Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center and Girl Scout cookies.

Vendors will present information and demonstrations on women’s health issues, beauty and fitness, stress relief, finances, housewares and jewelry.

There will be opportunities to buy from or place an order from companies such as Pampered Chef or Tupperware.

Women can check out the newest in home decor, recipes, hair and makeup.

“They’re things that affect a woman’s life, and they want to be informed,” Rizzo said. “Attendance is busy all day.”

The thousands of purses available for purchase at the Bagtastic Event are a big draw in the showcase, Rizzo said.

Vintage, designer, nondesigner, summer, winter, beaded and fabric purses will be on display, sorted by colors.

“When we open the doors at noon, they look at the purses first, then linger for demonstrations and to interact with the vendors,” Rizzo said. “Women will leave with 10 to 15 purses.”

Before going to the showcase, women can clean their closets by donating gently used purses, wallets and backpacks.

Volunteers from The Learning Lamp will make donations presentable for the Bagtastic Event.

Donations can be dropped off at The Tribune-Democrat and other locations until March 3.

Proceeds will benefit The Tribune-Democrat’s Newspapers in Education program to keep newspapers in the schools and The Learning Lamp’s afterschool programs and scholarships.

Snacks and beverages will be available.

Rizzo said door prizes will be given away all day, and during the last hour, a Basket Bash will feature gift baskets assembled by local merchants.

“We want to keep women engaged so they have a reason to stay there all day,” Rizzo said. “We try to make sure there are new things so women come back year after year. We want them to spend the day and have fun.”

Paid admission includes entrance to the Bagtastic Event, the Women’s Showcase and a drawing for more than 25 door prizes.
