The 2013 Summer Exhibition of Allied Artists of Johnstown will be on display through July 6 at Art Works in Johnstown, 413 Third Ave. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.
There are 77 pieces in the exhibit from Allied Artists’ members and five pieces from local students who are scholarship-award recipients.
Co-chairwomen are Allied Artists president Diane M. Safko and Marcene Glover.
“This is Allied Artists’ second exhibition held at Art Works in Johns-town,” Safko said. “Art Works offers plentiful gallery space and is located in the heart of Johnstown’s art hub.”
“The summer exhibition is designated annually for members only. It is, in essence, a showcase exhibition for our 100-plus members to share their creativity and invite the community to experience the vast talent that exists in our own backyard.”
Award winners were “1905,” by Brian Dumm of Ebensburg; “Chiarezza,” Lori Perrine Miglioretti of Johns-town; “The Lovely Geisha, Fan & Dragon,” Paul Rizak of Central City; “Fort Stanwix,” Bob Hovanec of
Johnstown; “Divine Light,” Joseph Berezansky of Johnstown; “My Kitty,” Christine Meyers of Johnstown; “Floral Landscape,” Lida Hood of Northern Cambria; “Sepia Tree,” Bill Dembowski of Elton; and “454-CV-13,” Ken Cotlar of Ebensburg.
Receiving honorable mentions were “G. Raffe” by Alan Lichtenfels of Johnstown; “Plumb Wheel,” Norman Ed of Johnstown; “Block Party,” Joy Fairbanks of Blairsville; “Death Valley Road,” Sherrill Begres of Blairsville; “Emma,” Mary Ann Regula of Johns-town; “455-PX-13,” Ken Cotlar of Ebensburg; and “Serenity,” Christine Meyers of Johnstown.
“The summer exhibition offers works skillfully created in many mediums, ranging from pencil drawings to acrylics, oil, watercolor, photography, glass, wood burning, metal and stone carving,” Safko said.
The exhibit’s juror, Robert Daley, earned his bachelor’s degree in studio arts from the University of Pittsburgh.
“It was an honor to have been asked to be the juror for the 2013 Allied Artists Summer Exhibition,” Daley said. “I never find it easy to give awards for artworks, particularly when there are so many outstanding pieces. My decisions were based primarily on what I like, but also on originality, design and use of the medium.
“All of the participants should be proud to be a part of an outstanding show of talent.”
Allied Artists’ scholarships are awarded to students who intend to advance their education in visual arts.
The 2013 scholarship award recipients are Brenden Lovejoy of Ferndale Area; Elizabeth Compton of Richland; Jena Wilson and Melissa Walko, both of Forest Hills; Christine Sopata of Cambria Heights; and Kristy Weber of Central Cambria.
Student works featured in the show are “The Duke,” charcoal; “Create,” graphite; and “Untitled,” oil pastel, by Sopata; and “Abe,” ink on paper, and “Marilyn,” block print on paper, by Lovejoy.
