Religion in brief | Episcopal women plan Lenten Quiet Day

— Episcopal Church Women will sponsor a Lenten Quiet Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 23 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 335 Locust St., downtown Johnstown.

Moments of silence will be observed through meditative prayer, visualization on Scripture, walking meditation, silent lunch and prayerfully creating a collage.

Susy Robison of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Highland Park will be the facilitator.

Coffee and light refreshments will be available and a light lunch will be provided.

Arbutus church

The Rev. Eric Kabler, guest minister, will deliver the message “Everyone Falls, But How Do You Get Back Up?” with Scripture from Romans 3:19-31, during the 9:15 a.m. Sunday worship service at Arbutus Church of the Brethren, 1201 Erickson Drive, Johnstown.

Anna May Walko will serve as worship leader.

Michelle Moore and Gwen Lesinski will be the greeters.

Sunday school will follow at 10:30.

Belmont UM

The Rev. Keith A. Dunn will deliver the message “A Strange Place to Start,” with Scripture from Luke 4:1-13, during the 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. Sunday worship services at Belmont United Methodist Church, 107 Coldren St., Johnstown.

Bethel UM

Kirk Rowland will be the guest speaker during the 8:30 and 11 a.m. Sunday worship services at Bethel United Methodist Church, 1021 Forest Hills Drive, Salix.

Kids for Christ will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

Beulah UM

Travis Knipple, a former local church member who is doing missionary work in Haiti, will deliver the message based on the Scripture reading from Colossians 3:12-17 during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Beulah United Methodist Church, 716 Bedford St., Johnstown.

A contemporary service will begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by Sunday school at 9:25.

Van transportation will be available.

Christ UM

The Rev. Kathleen Schoeneck will speak on “Focused on God, Not Satan,” based on Luke 4:1-13, during the 9:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Christ United Methodist Church, Ohio Street and Cypress Avenue in the Moxham section of Johnstown.

The service will include Holy Communion.

Harriett Miller will be the organist.

Community church

Conemaugh church

“The Church – You Are the Salt of the Earth,” with Scripture from Matthew 5:1-13,

will be the sermon during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Conemaugh Church of the Brethren, 1256 William Penn Ave., Johnstown.

Sunday school will begin at 9:30.

Women’s Bible study will continue the study of Hebrews  at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Preschool Play Day will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday. Adult Bible study  will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The choir will sing “Draw Me Nearer,” directed by Traci Weaver.

First Lutheran

The Rev. Eleanor Abarno will preach on Jesus’ temptation  in the wilderness at 5:30 tonight and 10:45 a.m. Sunday at First Lutheran Church, 415 Vine St., Johnstown, followed by Holy Communion and healing services.

The bell choir will play during the Sunday service.

The annual congregational meeting will be held following the service.

First UM

The Rev. Larry Rowe will deliver the sermon “Blue Streak Test,” with Scripture from Luke 4:1-13, during the 9:45 a.m. Sunday worship service at First United Methodist Church, 436 Vine St., Johnstown.

Following the children’s time message, the children will be dismissed for Sunday school.

Flood City

Grove Avenue UM

The Rev. Ed Schoeneck will discuss the Lenten theme “The Way: You Don’t Choose a Life; You Live a Life” with the message “The Wandering Way,” taken from Luke 4:1-13, during the Sunday services at Grove Avenue United Methodist Church, 501 Grove Ave. in the Moxham section of Johnstown.

A contemporary worship service, with music provided by Eclectic Praise Band under the direction of Denise Baldwin, will begin at 9 a.m. Fellowship will follow.

Adult Sunday school will begin at 9:15 and children and youth Sunday schools will begin at 9:30.

A traditional worship service will be held at 10:45. Judy Custer, organist and choir director, will lead the choir in singing the anthem.

Holy Trinity

A worship service for Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 525 Main St., Berlin, will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday, followed by Sunday school at 10.

The youth group will meet at 4 p.m., followed by Youth of God Chimes at 5 and task force meeting at 7.

Quilters & Knotters will meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday with a council meeting and women’s Bible study at 7 p.m.

The senior choir will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, followed by adult bells at 7:30.

ALPHA will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday and the quilters will meet at 9 a.m. Friday.

Johnstown Fellowship

“Tell Me What You See” will be the message during the 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship services at Greater Johnstown Christian Fellowship, 3429 Elton Road.

Moxham Lutheran

The First Sunday in Lent will be observed with Holy Communion during the 8:15 and

11 a.m. Sunday services at Moxham Lutheran Church, 500 Park Ave., Johnstown.

Sunday school will begin at 9:30 in the sanctuary and a Lenten forum will begin at 9:45.

A Lenten ecumenical service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, 609 Park Ave., Moxham, followed by a meal.

Moxham Lutheran Church’s Lenten supper will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, followed by worship at 7:15.

Park Avenue UM

Roxbury church

The Rev. Brian Simmons will speak on “You Have Made the Lord Your Refuge,” with Scripture from Luke 4:1-13 and Psalm 91:1-2 and 9-16, during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Roxbury Church of the Brethren, 112 Sell St., Johnstown.

The cathedral choir will sing “God Is Our Refuge and Our Strength,” directed by Melanie Shiley and accompanied by Laura Krouse, pianist.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a can of fruit for the Walnut Grove Food Pantry.

A covered-dish dinner will follow the service.

Choir practice will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday with Simmons leading a Bible study at 7:15.

Richard Gary will be the worship leader.
