JOHNSTOWN — The latest exhibition at a local museum features a selection of its newest paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture by artists of national and regional stature.

“Arriving in Style: Recent Acquisitions of the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Loretto,” which involves 76 pieces, will be on display through June 14 at the Loretto museum, located on the campus of St. Francis University.

During the past several years, the museum has received an unprecedented number of fine gifts and bequests of art into its permanent collection.

Some of the recent artistic acquisitions have already been displayed, while numerous recent gifts have not yet been seen by the general public.

A number of the works in the Geoffrey Wagner bequest of paintings and drawings by Colleen Browning have been displayed in exhibitions such as “Colleen Browning: A Brush with Magic” and “The Sullivan Family: Legacy Exhibition.”

The exhibition seeks to strike a balance between popular favorites and new objects to give a sense of the richness and diversity of the museum’s collections.

Highlights include a selection of Old Master prints and drawings, early paintings by Browning, Tibetan thangkas and contemporary art glass.

In addition, there are new works by prominent regional artists, including Daniel Burke, Cliff McGuire, Donald M. Robinson and Aileen Zollweg.

The museum’s permanent collection has grown steadily since its founding in 1976.

From a core collection of 67 objects, the museum’s holdings now number nearly 4,500 paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures, as well as art objects in glass and other media.

The past five years have been especially noteworthy as new and significant donations of art continue to come in regularly.

Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturdays.
