Religion in brief | Christian men's choir in concert Sunday

Johnstown Christian Men’s Choir, representing several area churches, will present gospel music at 7 p.m. Sunday at Thomas Mennonite Church, 112 Swank Road, Thomas Mills.

The group, directed by Phil Handlin, and accompanied by Cindy Lazer, has been ministering in song for more than 20 years.

Albright UM to host West End hymn sing

The churches of the West End will hold a hymn sing at 7 p.m. Sunday at Albright United Methodist Church, 608 Cooper Ave., Johnstown.

A social time with refreshments will follow.

Church will hold egg decorating classes

Pysanky egg decorating

classes will be held at 7 p.m. Fridays from Feb. 15 through March 22 at Holy Trinity Byzantine Catholic Church, 217 Fourth St., East Conemaugh.

Paul Yackulich Jr. and Ron Wanko will conduct the classes and participants will be given instruction and create their own Ukrainian egg to take home each night.

Belmont UM

The Rev. Keith A. Dunn will deliver the message “Face to Face,” with Scripture from

Exodus 34:29-35, during the 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. Sunday worship services at Belmont United Methodist Church, 107 Coldren St., Johnstown.

Sunday school will begin at 9:30.

Nursery and children’s church will be available.

Dunn also will deliver the message “Return to Me,” with Scripture from Joel 2:12-17, during the 7 p.m. Ash Wednesday service.

Bethany UM

Pastor Patricia Cleary will preach on “Take It Off,” based on 2 Corinthians 3:12-4:2, during the 9:30 a.m. Sunday service at Bethany United Methodist Church, 112 Leventry Road, Johnstown.

There will be a time for the children and junior church and a staffed nursery will be available.

An Ash Wednesday service will be held at 5:45 p.m.

Weekly prayer time begins at 9 a.m. Tuesdays.

The Rev. Don Poole will share the message “Jesus: Always the Same” during the 8:30 and 11 a.m. Sunday services at Bethel United Methodist Church, 1021 Forest Hills Drive, Salix.

Youth RUSH will meet at 6 p.m.

Beulah UM

Love Our Choirs will be celebrated during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Beulah United Methodist Church, 716 Bedford St., Johnstown.

The Rev. Jeffrey Popson will deliver the message “How to Love,” based on John 15:9-17.

A contemporary service will begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by Sunday school at 9:25.

Van transportation will be available.

An Ash Wednesday service will be held at 7 p.m. with the marking of the cross.

Christ UM

The Rev. Kathleen Schoeneck will speak on “Transfiguring,” based on Luke 9:28-36, at the 9:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Christ United Methodist Church, Ohio Street and Cypress Avenue in the Moxham section of Johnstown.

The senior choir will sing “Awesome God,” directed by Hariett Miller.

Beverly Rager will be the worship leader. Pat Hull will be the greeter.

Fellowship will follow the service. Sunday school will begin at 10:45.

Community church

The Rev. Charles H. Zimmerman will speak on “Are You Burned Out on Religion” during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Community Open Door Church, Menoher Boulevard and Luzerne Street, Johnstown.

Marlene Beckwith will deliver the children’s message.

Conemaugh church

“The Christian Is Different,” with Scripture from Matthew 5:1-12, will be the message

during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Conemaugh Church of the Brethren,

1256 William Penn Ave., Johnstown.

Ricky Stahl will provide special music.

Children’s church and nursery will be available.

Sunday school will begin at 9:30.

Women’s Bible study will continue the study on Hebrews at 10 a.m. Tuesday. A men’s fellowship will be held at 6:30 p.m.

Preschool play day will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday. An adult Bible study on prayer will continue at 6:30 p.m.

The Rev. Nila Cogan will lead a worship service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Dunmyer Lutheran Church, 547 Schoolhouse Road, Johnstown. Communion will be offered during the service.

A Shrove Tuesday meal will be held at 6 p.m.

Cogan will hold an Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. at St. Thomas Lutheran Church, 1439 Ridge Road, Hooversville.

Faith UM

The Rev. Len Findley will share the message “Are You Looking for Shade,” with

Scripture from 2 Corinthians 3:12-4:2, during the 9:30 a.m. Sunday service at Faith United Methodist Church, 369 Glessner Road, Johnstown.

An Ash Wednesday service will be held at 7 p.m.

Ferndale UM

The Rev. Len Findley will deliver the message “Are You Looking for Shade,” with

Scripture from 2 Corinthians 3:12-4:2, during the 10:40 a.m. Sunday service at Ferndale United Methodist Church, 701 Vickroy Ave., Johnstown.

Installation of officers will be held during the service.

The choir will sing “Back to the Church in the Wildwood,” directed by Traci Weaver.

Amy Findley and Brandon Anderson will be the greeters.

Jack and Lundy Feathers will be the nursery helpers.

Brandon Anderson will be the acolyte.

The 97th anniversary of the church will be held Sunday with a covered-dish luncheon in the fellowship room following the worship.

Movie night will be held at 6 Friday.

First Lutheran

The Transfiguration of Our Lord will be celebrated with Holy Communion at 5:30 tonight and 10:45 a.m. Sunday at First Lutheran Church, 415 Vine St., Johnstown.

The Rev. Eleanor Abarno will base her sermon on Luke 9.

New members will be received during the service, followed by a party.

An Ash Wednesday service of Holy Communion and imposition of ashes will be held at 12:30 and 7:30 p.m.

First Presbyterian

The Gospel lesson for the 10:45 a.m. Sunday worship service at First Presbyterian Church, 1101 Somerset Ave., Windber, will be based on Luke 9.

First UM

The Rev. Larry Rowe will deliver the sermon “From a Distance,” with Scripture from Luke 9:28-43, during the 9:45 a.m. Sunday worship service at First United Methodist Church, 436 Vine St., Johnstown.

A valentine’s reception will follow the service.

An Ash Wednesday service with imposition of ashes will be held at 7 p.m.

Flood City

The sermon series “Love at Last Sight” will continue during the 9 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday services at Flood City Church, 1723 Scalp Ave., Johnstown.

Brad and Cathy Westover, lead pastors, will deliver the message “The Art of Acting Intentionally.”

Grace Brethren

The Rev. Rick Horner will share the fourth of a series of messages on the main elements of a local church during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service at Grace Brethren Church, Oak and Second streets, East Conemaugh.

Grove Avenue UM

The Rev. Ed Schoeneck will deliver the message “Joy: Savoring God’s Gifts,” taken from Luke 9:28-36, during the Sunday services at Grove Avenue United Methodist Church, 501 Grove Ave. in the Moxham section of Johnstown.

A contemporary worship service, with music provided by Eclectic Praise Band under the direction of Denise Baldwin, will be held at 9 a.m., followed by fellowship.

Adult Sunday school will begin at 9:15. Children and youth Sunday school will begin at 9:30.

A traditional worship service will be held at 10:45, with Judy Custer, organist and choir director, leading the choir in singing an anthem.

Nursery will be available, with Mandy Gonzales, coordinator.

Holy Trinity

A worship service for Holy Trinity Lutheran Church,

525 Main St., Berlin, will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday, followed by Sunday school at 10.

A youth planning meeting will begin at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, followed by youth group at 4, Youth of God Chimes at 5 and Task Force meeting at 7.

Quilters and Knotters will meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday and a Shrove meal will be held at 6:30 p.m., followed by a women’s Bible study at 7.

The senior choir will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, followed by an Ash Wednesday service at 7 and adult bells at 7:30.

ALPHA will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday. Quilters will meet at 9 a.m. Friday.

Johnstown Fellowship

Pastor Gary L. Tustin will speak about “The Plot, The Passion, The Price of the Passover” during the 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship services at Greater Johnstown Christian Fellowship, 3429 Elton Road.

Pastor Denny Forosisky will teach Sunday school class at 9:30 a.m.

Laurel Trinity

Sharing Our Sorrows group meeting will be held at noon Tuesday at Rey Azteca in Somerset, and bowling and Cub Scouts will meet at 6 p.m.

Knotty women will meet to sew at 9 a.m. Wednesday and choir practice will begin at 6, followed by a soup supper at 6:30 and service of ashes/seven faith practices at 7.

Girl Scouts will meet at 5 p.m. Thursday, followed by church council meeting at 7.

Trinity Players’ rehearsal will be held at 7 p.m. Friday.

Park Avenue UM

The Rev. Kathleen Schoeneck will speak on “Transforming” during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Park Avenue United Methodist Church, 700 Park Ave., Johnstown.

Sunday school will begin at 9:15.

Roxbury Church

The Rev. Brian Simmons, pastor of Roxbury Church of the Brethren, 112 Sell St., Johnstown, will speak on “Time Management for Christians – Make the Most of the Time,” with Scripture from Colossians 4:2-6, during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service.

Ruben and Claire Montoya will sing “In Christ Alone,” accompanied by Laura Krouse, pianist.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a can of vegetables for Walnut Grove Food Pantry.

Commissions will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, followed by the board of administration meeting at 8.

Choir practice will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, followed by  Simmons leading a Bible study at 7:15.

Summit Chapel UM

A representative from Gideons, an organization that distributes Bibles throughout the world, will speak during the 9:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at  Summit Chapel United Methodist Church, 2142 William Penn Ave., Johnstown.

Dorothy Weaver will be the worship leader.

The choir will sing an anthem, directed by Dale Wicks.

The hymns will be accompanied by Carol Gresh and Dave Price.

Walnut Grove

The Rev. Ron Barto will begin his sermon series on “We Would See Jesus” with the message “Jesus, A Man Worth Watching,” based on Hebrews 12:1-3, during the 10 a.m. Sunday worship service at Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren, 1068 Bedford St., Johnstown.

There will be a children’s message and the choir will present special music.

Windber Calvary UM

The Rev. John Snyder will deliver the message “Transfiguration,” taken from the Gospel lesson of Luke 9:28-43, during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Windber Calvary United Methodist Church, 1800 Stockholm Ave.

The Chancel Choir will sing “Holy Is the Lord,” directed and accompanied by Robert Shaffer.

Pat Bossi will be the organist.

There will be a children’s sermonette.

Church school will begin at 9. Fellowship will begin at 9:30.

Lent will begin on Ash Wednesday with a Liturgy of Holy Communion and the imposition of ashes being celebrated at 2 and 7:30 p.m., with a Gospel reading from Matthew 6:1-6 and 16-21.
