Religion in brief | Brethrens name teams at conference

JOHNSTOWN — Timothy E. Resh of Somerset was installed Oct. 20 as moderator of the Western Pennsylvania District Conference – Church of the Brethren – during the 146th annual district conference at St. Vincent College, Latrobe.

Homer A. Foster of Kittanning, Armstrong County, is moderator designate.

The district is comprised of 67 churches and one fellowship with a membership of more than 9,000.

The budget of $187,833 for 2013 was adopted by 173 delegates representing 49 congregations.

James E. Houghton of Johnstown will chair the leadership team. Other members are Carole A. Nedrow of Export, Westmoreland County; Adele Madera of Johnstown; Kristina Peters of Kittanning; Sandra Peterman of Shelocta, Indiana County; and Brady Liepelt of Sipesville.

Dottie H. Grew of Meyersdale will serve a three-year term on the program and arrangements committee.

Shelby F. McCoy of Friedens and Dorothy Gindlesperger of Hooversville will serve three-year terms on the board of directors of Camp Harmony.

Crystal L. Reiber of Somerset, Randy A. Derck of Shelocta and Daniel R. Ishman of Freeport, Armstrong County, will serve four-year terms on the gifts discernment team.

-- Believer’s Fellowship

Pastor Karen Yates will speak during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Believer’s Fellowship Family Church, 551 Cambria Ave., Revloc.

Bill Hugill will lead the congregation.

Nursery and children’s and youth church will be available.

Midweek Overflow, a contemporary worship service and teaching, will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The Rev. Don Poole will lead the 8 and 11 a.m. Sunday worship services at Bethel United Methodist Church, 1021 Forest Hills Drive, Salix.

Sunday school will begin at 9:45. The youth will meet at 6 p.m.

-- Beulah UM

The Rev. Jeffrey Popson will deliver the message “How A Christian Grieves,” with Scripture from 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, during an All Saints Day Sunday worship service at 10:30 a.m. at Beulah United Methodist Church, 716 Bedford St., Johnstown.

Praise worship will begin at 8:30. Sunday School will be held at 9:25.

The Rev. Kathleen Schoeneck will deliver the message “Loyalties,” with Scripture from Mark 12:28-34, during the 9:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Christ United Methodist Church, Ohio Street and Cypress Avenue in the Moxham section of Johnstown.

The choir will sing “When We All Get to Heaven,” directed by Harriett Miller.

The greeter is Helen MacDowell. Norma Bowser is the worship leader.

Sunday school begins at 10:45.

-- Community church

A leaf raking party for singles will be held at 10 a.m. today at Community Open Door Church,  Menoher Boulevard and Luzerne Street, Johnstown.

The event is sponsored by Emmanuel Baptist Church and Community Open Door Church.

Pastor Len Findley will deliver the message “Your Perception or God’s Reality,” with Scripture from John 11:17-44, during the 10:40 a.m. Sunday worship service at Ferndale United Methodist Church, 701 Vickroy Ave., Johnstown.

Holy Communion will be celebrated.

The choir will sing “This Is Love,” directed by Traci Weaver.

Al and Barb Keith are the greeters. Charmalene Rex and Stephanie Wagner are the nursery helpers.

Following the service, the youth fellowship will serve apple dumplings in the social room.

An Election Day pork and sauerkraut dinner will be served from 5 to 7 p.m.

First Lutheran Church, 415 Vine St., downtown Johnstown, will mark All Saints Day with a rite of candle lighting in memory of relatives and friends.

Pastor Eleanor Abarno will preside at the rite of remembrance and Holy Communion at 5:30 tonight and 10:45 a.m. Sunday.

-- First Presbyterian

All Saints Sunday will be observed during the 10:45 a.m. Sunday worship service at    First Presbyterian Church, 309 Lincoln St., downtown Johnstown.

First Sunday coffee social, which includes fellowship and a light lunch, will follow.

Holy Communion will be celebrated at 9:45 a.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church, 436 Vine St., downtown Johnstown.

The Rev. Larry Rowe will deliver the message “The Lord Will Provide,” with Scripture from Hebrews 11:17-19.

Children’s Sunday school will follow children’s time during the service.

Adult Sunday school will be held at 11.

Bible study will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Pastor Brad Westover will continue the teaching on the Ten Commandments at 9 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Flood City Church, 1723 Scalp Ave., Johnstown.

-- Grove Avenue UM

The Rev. Ed Schoeneck will lead the 9 a.m. contemporary  and 10:45 traditional         Sunday worship services at Grove Avenue United Methodist Church, 501 Grove Ave. in the Moxham section of Johnstown.

His message will be “You Lift Me Up,” based on Hebrews 12:1-3.

Communion will be observed during both services.

Music for the contemporary service will be provided by Eclectic Praise Band, directed by Denise Baldwin.

Fellowship will follow.

Judy Custer, organist and choir director, will lead the choir in “You Raise Me Up” during the traditional service. Carol Yewcic will sing “Song of the Saints.”

Adult Sunday school begins at 9:15.

The Rev. Traci Bowman will officiate during All Saints Sunday services at 8:45 and 11:15 a.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 7520 Somerset Pike, Boswell.

Communion instruction will be held from 3 to 5 p.m.

All Saints Sunday will be observed at Moxham Lutheran Church, 500 Park Ave. in the Moxham section of Johnstown, during the 8:15 and 11 a.m. Sunday worship services.

Captive Free East Lakes music ministry team will lead worship.

Sunday school will begin at 9:30.

Worship will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The Rev. Jason McQueen will lead a worship service at 9 a.m. Sunday at Mount Hope United Methodist Church, 258 Mount Hope Road, South Fork.

Bible study will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

-- Moxham Brethren

Gary Green will speak during the 10:10 a.m. Sunday worship service at Moxham Church of the Brethren, 536 Grove Ave., Johnstown.

Scripture will be read from Psalm 16.

Members of Praise Center Full Gospel Church, 200 Cooper Ave. in the West End section of Johnstown, will observe the church’s 14th anniversary.

A concert by the Graves Family Singers will begin the celebration at 5:30 tonight.

Evangelist Lisa Graves will deliver the spoken word.

Minister James Britt of Stevens Holy Church will bring the message at 11 a.m. Sunday.

The theme for the celebration is “Unless the Lord Builds the House, They Labor in Vain That Build It,” with Scripture from Psalm 127:1A.

A community dinner will be served following the Sunday worship.

-- Roxbury church

Pastor Brian Simmons will deliver the message “Baptized in the Name of the Lord Jesus,” based on Scripture from Acts 19:1-10, during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service at Roxbury Church of the Brethren, 112 Sell St., Johnstown.

Sunday school begins at 9:30.

The choir will sing “Lord, I Stretch My Hand to You,” directed by Melanie Shiley and accompanied by Ruth Corle, organist.

Bible study will held at 6 p.m. Thursday, followed by choir practice at 7.

-- Roxbury St. Paul’s

The Rev. Wayne D. Sedei will deliver the message “The Most Holy Place,” based on Hebrews 9:11-28, during the 8 a.m. Sunday praise service and 10:30 a.m. worship service at Roxbury St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 160 Derby St., Johnstown.

Sunday school begins at 9:15.

-- St. James

The Rev. J. Van Alfred Winsett, pastor emeritus of Ebenezer Baptist Church,    Pittsburgh, will speak during the 53rd church anniversary service at  11 a.m. Sunday at St. James Missionary Baptist Church, 400 Pine St., Johnstown.

Revival services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday at the church. The guest preacher is the Rev. Wesley McLaughlin, pastor of Mount Olivet Baptist Church, Petersburg, Va.

-- Second Presbyterian

The Rev. Art Moffatt Jr. will speak on “Why Were We Created?” with Scripture from Daniel 5, during the 10 a.m. Sunday service at Second Presbyterian Church, 565 Park Ave. in the Moxham section of Johnstown.

The choir will sing “How Beautiful,” directed by Sarah Pruss.

Holy Communion will be observed.

-- Somerset Alliance

Roof Garden Patriots will host a special prayer service at  7 p.m. Monday at Somerset Alliance Church, 708 Stoystown Road.

-- Summit Chapel UM

Summit Chapel United Methodist Church, 2142 William Penn Ave., Johnstown, will hold its annual bazaar from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today.

“Our Hope for Eternal Life Is in Jesus Christ” will be the theme of the 9:30 a.m. Sunday worship service honoring the saints.

Scripture will be taken from 2 Corinthians 5:1-10.

Stephen Gresh will sing a solo.

Holy Communion will be served at the chancel rail.

-- Westmont UM

Remembrance Sunday will be observed during the 10:45 a.m. worship service at Westmont United Methodist Church,  1428 Menoher Blvd., Johnstown.

Thirty-five people who died during the past year will be remembered.

Sunday school will begin at 9:30.

-- Windber Calvary

The Rev. John Snyder will deliver the message “Love God and Neighbor,” with Scripture from John 11:32-44, during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Windber Calvary United Methodist Church, 1800 Stockholm Ave.

The choir will sing “Crossing Over There,” directed by Robert Shaffer. Pat Bossi will be the organist.

A commemoration of the congregation’s departed faithful will be observed.

Church school will begin at 9.

Fellowship will follow at 9:30.

Liturgy of Holy Communion also will be celebrated at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in St. John’s Memorial Chapel.
