Windber girls work past Mountaineers, take WestPAC

By CORY ISENBERG
The Tribune-Democrat

MEYERSDALE It came down to the final few events before a girls team winner was crowned Monday at Meyersdale Area High School in the WestPAC Track and Field Championship.

In the end, Windber claimed the team title with 131 points, just nine points ahead of second-place Berlin Brothersvalley.

“I was real happy with the girls,” Windber coach Tim Saylor said. “We had some expectations for this year for the girls, and at times we were falling short. We don’t have as much depth as we’ve had in the past. We also have a lot of young people and our underclassmen are stepping up and our seniors are stepping up. Sounds like it was a total team effort here.”

Rockwood was third with 114 points, followed by Meyersdale (74) and Conemaugh Township (69).

Sarah Snyder produced a pair of victories for the Ramblers with winning runs in the 100 (15.8) and 300 (47.8) hurdles.

Windber’s Lexi Lapinsky won the 800 in 2:39.1 and, along with teammates Kirsten Michaels, Tonya Bibby and Sara Bibby, won the 3200 relay in 10:44.3.

The Ramblers’ Courtney Mullen won the javelin with a toss of 108-feet-5.

Berlin’s Nicole Hankinson was a three-time winner with victories in the 100 (12.9), 200 (26.7) and the 400 (1:02.8).

“I expected to do good, but I set a personal record in the 200 and I really didn’t expect to do that,” Hankinson said. “I knew I was seeded first in the 100 and I expected to get first. I was seeded fourth in the 400, but I just ran my race.”

Polina Osmolinski of Conemaugh Township earned a pair of victories, with winning runs in the 1600 (5:51.7) and the 3200 (13:18.8).

Township teammate Kelly Vann was the top jumper in the pole vault (9-6) while the 400 relay foursome of Megan Oleseky, Annie Bridges, Chelsea Levergood and Julie Byer won in 53.3.

Shade’s Chloe Mapes had the top performance in the high jump with a winning leap of 5-1. Mapes then joined Bri Will, Brianna Mapes and Amiee Thompson for the winning run of 4:21.1 in the 1600 relay.

Rockwood’s Ashley Hutchison was a double winner, claiming victories in the shot put (32-8) and the discus (96-2). Rockets teammate Nicole Sterner won the long jump with a leap of 15-7.

Ashleigh Munion of Meyersdale won the triple jump with a leap of 34-0 1/2.
