Local Sport Briefs 5-9

JOHNSTOWN — Softball

Shade 8, Conemaugh Township 7: In Cairnbrook, McKenna Daugherty struck out five, giving her 102 for her career, to lead the Panthers.

Daugherty went 2-for-4 while Mikayla Ott doubled for the hosts. Neither team had an earned run.

Kayla Luprek went 3-for-4 for the Indians while Kayla Folta was 2-for-4 with a double.

Conemaugh Valley 10, Ferndale 6: Mary Angus had three hits, including a double, while Kate Stiffler and Brooke McCleester had two hits each to lead the visiting Blue Jays.

Taylor Yuhas had two hits, including a double, for the hosts, while Leah Cenko had two hits and Cassandra Vivis doubled.

The result set the opponents for Tuesday’s WestPAC championship, which will be played at 4:30 p.m. at the V.E. Erickson complex in Richland. Shade will represent the South and Conemaugh Valley will represent the North.

Westmont Hilltop 16, Central Cambria 9: In Ebensburg, the Hilltoppers’ Jillian Foster had four RBI to help defeat the Red Devils in eight innings.

Westmont Hilltop’s Alyssa Miller added three hits and two RBI to the win. 

Central Cambria’s Kirsten Lajudice had four singles. 

Cambria Heights 16, Somerset 1: In Patton, the Highlanders’ Cat Cox had three hits with five RBI in a LHAC victory over the Golden Eagles. 

Cambria Heights’ Julia Pritchard had three hits with two RBI and Kara Cordell hit a triple with two RBI.

Somerset’s Bailey Steinbiser hit two singles in the loss.

Richland 4, Bedford 3: The Rams’ Ally Black hit a single, a double, and knocked in two runs to help edge the Bisons. 

Richland’s Courtney Syfert, Ashely Swansboro and Ally Leventry each had one hit and scored a run.

Bedford’s Paige Hillegas had three hits with a triple and a run scored. 

Bishop Carroll 5, Greater Johnstown 0: In Ebensburg, the Huskies’ Sarah Gomish had three hits and two RBI in a win against the Trojans.

Abby Simmons earned the win by striking out three in the shutout. 

Greater Johnstown’s Tara Bicko had two singles.

Ligonier Valley 13, Northern Cambria 5: In Ligonier, Jamie Wynn and Caitlin Michaels each had two hits with three RBI to help the Rams beat the Colts. 

Ligonier Valley’s Hannah Yeskey had two hits and scored three runs in the Heritage Conference win.

Northern Cambria’s Emily Pavelko and Kelly Lieb each had two hits in the loss.


North Star 2, Windber 1: In Boswell, winning pitcher Shane Supanick struck out 15, gave up a walk and had three hits to help his cause. Nolan Pritts had two hits for the Cougars.

Cameron Banjak had two hits for Windber.

Bishop McCort 12, Cambria Heights 4: In Patton, a three-hit, three-RBI day from Nemo Trexler led the way as the Crimson Crushers topped Cambria Heights. Alex Sobecky had two hits for Bishop McCort, which capitalized on seven Highlanders errors.

Richard Legros was 3-for-4 and Joe Kinney had two hits in the loss.

Bedford 9, Richland 7 (8): In Bedford, a two-run home run by Zach Shaffer allowed the Bisons to walk off with an eight-inning win over Richland.

Isaac Kline and Austin Montgomery also hit two-run home runs for Bedford.

Tyler Mikesic swatted a home run and drove in two runs for the Rams, who received three hits from Matt Roland and Jack Shirk.

Northern Cambria 12, Ligonier Valley 8: In Ligonier, the Colts’ Joe Frontino had two hits with three RBI in an eight-inning win to help beat the Rams and clinch the Heritage Conference title. 

Northern Cambria’s Josh Prasko had three hits with two RBI and John Hornick had two hits with two RBI.

The Colts finished the season with a 12-5 record.

Conemaugh Valley 3, Ferndale 1: The Blue Jays’ Blake Furman had nine strikouts in a complete-game win against the Yellow Jackets. 

Conemaugh Valley’s Anthony Verno, Corey Kalinyak and Christian Aurandt each had an RBI in the WestPAC win.

Ferndale’s Trey McGough had a single and knocked in it’s only run. 

Portage 13, Blacklick Valley 3: In Portage, the Mustangs’ Bailey Kerch struck out eight and gave up only three runs in a lashing against the Vikings. 

Portage clinched the WestPAC North title.

Portage’s Brad Rosemas had three hits with five RBI and two home runs. Zach Coukart added three RBI in the win.

Blacklick Valley’s Derek Cesarz hit a single and had an RBI.

Somerset 14, Central Cambria 1: In Ebensburg, the Golden Eagles’ Raven Beeman hit a two run home run, scored twice, and had four RBI to help mercy rule the Red Devils in five innings. 

Somerset’s Tanner Stull had two hits and scored one run. Bryce Mostoller had two hits with two RBI and Alex Dirienzo had two hits with three RBI and two runs scored in the LHAC win.

Tom Howell delivered an RBI single for the Red Devils.

Bishop Carroll 18-18, Penn Cambria 1-14: In Lilly, the Huskies’ Brandon Martinazzi had a total of five hits with five RBI in a doubleheader sweep against the Panthers.

Bishop Carroll’s Marty Lessard had two hits and three RBI.

Penn Cambria’s Garret Martynuska had four hits and Gavin Martynuska had three hits with three RBI in the second game.
