Westmont girls take district tennis title

SIDMAN — Westmont Hilltop captured the District 6 Class AA girls tennis team title on Friday with a

5-0 victory over Forest Hills in Sidman.

The Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference champion Hilltoppers (15-0) will begin PIAA play on Tuesday in Altoona.

Westmont opened on Friday by sweeping the singles matches, led by No. 1 Beth Carney’s

6-2, 6-1 victory over Ranger Emily Goldyn.

Hilltopper Ellie Kane followed with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Forest Hills’ Rachel Blanchetti at No. 2 singles, while Lauren Fegly completed the sweep with a hard-fought

7-5, 6-7 (3-0), 10-0 victory over Forest Hills’ Kayla Makin.

The Hilltoppers finished the afternoon with a pair of doubles victories, as Nicole Barnhart and Corrin Claycomb defeated the Rangers Emily Shirt and Brianna Neff 6-1, 2-6, 6-4; and the team of Ashely Kush and Lauren Criswell downed Forest Hills’ Maggie Long and Cheyenne Helsel 6-1, 6-4.

Westmont also celebrated Fegly, Barnhart and Claycomb on Friday after all three players went unbeaten at 15-0 during the regular season.

Forest Hills finished its season at 14-4.
