District 6 lists Class A, AA seedings

JOHNSTOWN — On Tuesday, District 6 basketball chairman T.J. Kakabar released the seedings for Class A and AA for the upcoming basketball tournament.

The Portage girls and the boys from Bishop Carroll and Richland all earned top seeds in their respective classes.

The Mustangs were 18-1 when the points were tabulated after the cutoff date and head the 10-team field in Class A. Defending champion Bishop Guilfoyle is the second seed.

Three other area teams that are seeded in Class A girls include United at No. 4, Bishop Carroll, fifth and Conemaugh Valley, in the sixth spot.

The unbeaten Huskies (19-0) are in a nine-team field which includes defending champ Bishop Guilfoyle in the second spot.

Bishop Carroll swept its two regular-season meetings with the Marauders.

The Portage boys are the only other area squad and are seeded fifth.

In Class AA boys, despite being just 5-5 in their last 10 games, the Rams (15-3) claimed the top seed just ahead of No. 2 Tyrone (16-3) in the 12-team field.

Laurel Highlands Conference Section 2 winner Bishop McCort (13-4) is the sixth seed. The other two area teams include Central Cambria (8-10) at No. 11 and Cambria Heights (8-12), 13th.

In the 12-team field, defending Class AA girls champion Blairsville is the top seed for this year’s tournament with a 17-1 record.

Westmont Hilltop (14-3) is seeded second while Bishop McCort (13-4) is fourth.

The other two area teams that have entered the playoffs are Penn Cambria (12-6) in the ninth spot and Central Cambria (8-10) in No. 11.

The seedings for Class AAA and Quad-A boys and girls are still to be released.

The first-round schedule for teams is to be released today.
