The third annual Santa Fund Soccer Classic, featuring all-star seniors from Cambria and Somerset Counties, will be held as a boys and girls doubleheader on Nov. 23 at Greater Johnstown’s Trojan Stadium.
The Classic benefits The Tribune-Democrat’s Santa Fund, a program which helps distribute Christmas gifts to needy children in the region.
The soccer all-star games have raised nearly $20,000 toward the program in the first three years, while the Santa Fund has distributed almost $100,000 in toys to children over the past five years.
Two seniors from each school within The Tribune-Democrat coverage area will be selected to either the North or South squads, as voted upon by the area’s coaches.
The North squad will be comprised of players from United, Bishop Carroll, Bishop McCort, Cambria County Christian, Cambria Heights, Greater Johnstown, Richland and Westmont Hilltop.
The South squad will be made up of all-stars from Bedford, Berlin, Conemaugh Township, Johnstown Christian, Meyersdale, Ligonier Valley, North Star, Rockwood, Somerset and Windber.
An area coach will also be honored to coach each all-star team, as elected by his peers.
In mid-October, The Tribune-Democrat will be mailing ballots to the area’s coaches for their selections, as the voting deadline will be Oct. 21.
After the votes are tallied, the all-star teams will be listed in The Tribune-Democrat.
The Santa Fund Soccer Classic will kickoff at 1:30 p.m. at Trojan Stadium with the girls game, followed by the boys all-stars at 3.
The admission at the gate for both games is a minimum $5 donation.
The Santa Fund partners are also seeking sponsorships for this event at the following levels: Santa’s Reindeer – $1,000; Santa’s Elf – $500; and Santa’s Helper – $250.
