Somerset County prison guard charged with smuggling pot, porn, other items

SOMERSET — A guard at a Somerset County prison has been charged with conspiring with two inmates to smuggle contraband into the lockup, including marijuana, pornographic magazines and Muslim religious oils.

The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections says 35-year-old Donald Lynch, of Fort Loudon, was charged Tuesday after his wife told investigators that Lynch had boasted of making easy money by smuggling the items into SCI-Somerset.

According to a criminal complaint filed by internal investigators, Lynch smuggled some of the items into the state prison in Somerset in tennis balls and hollow, plastic practice golf balls. The drugs and other items were sent to Lynch’s home by friends of inmates, who also paid him with Visa gift cards or by transfers into a PayPal account.

Court records don’t list an attorney for Lynch. A prison spokeswoman didn’t return a call on his employment status.
