Police say 82-year-old fired shot into home

4 people were inside, state troopers report

SALISBURY — A Somerset County senior armed with a rifle tried to force his way into a home in Elk Lick Township before firing one round into the front door, according to state police at the Somerset barracks.

No one was injured in the Saturday morning shooting. Troopers subdued the gunman.

Police said 82-year-old Richard Livengood was armed with a .22-caliber rifle when he arrived at a home along Shade Hollow Road around 9 a.m.

Four people, ages 27 to 75, were believed to be inside.

Livengood kicked the front door in an attempt to enter, police said, then went to the kitchen window and pointed the gun. He went back to the front door and fired one round into the glass portion of the door, police said.

Livengood was arraigned by on-call District Judge Sandra Stevanus of Confluence on charges of aggravated assault, attempted burglary, discharge of a firearm into an occupied structure, simple assault, reckless endangerment and harassment.

He was sent to the Somerset County Jail after failing to post $150,000 bond.

Online court records don’t list an attorney for  Livengood.

Troopers from Maryland and the Somerset turnpike barracks also were at the scene.
