Russian-born student set for bomb-making plea

PITTSBURGH — A Russian-born college student has been scheduled to plead guilty in August to charges that he built bombs without a license in his central Pennsylvania apartment.

Federal prosecutors in Johnstown authorities last week filed a criminal information against 18-year-old Vladislav Miftakhov after months of negotiations with his federal public defender, who did not immediately return messages for comment Tuesday.

Miftakhov was a Penn State-Altoona student from San Carlos, California, and has been incarcerated since local police acting on a landlord’s tip that he was growing marijuana in his off-campus apartment also found bomb-making materials there Jan. 24. Federal authorities took over the investigation because of the explosives.

Miftakhov’s attorney has said his client didn’t intend to harm anyone with the bombs.

Online court records show he’s agreed to waive indictment and plead guilty Aug. 19.
