Former teacher gets prison for pupil trysts

A former western Pennsylvania high school physical education teacher must serve five to 10 years in prison and 10 years on probation, and register as a sex offender for having a 13-month sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student.

Forty-three-year-old Bret Anthony Thompson, of Penn Hills, was sentenced Tuesday by a Westmoreland County judge before whom he had pleaded guilty to 46 sex-related charges in January.

Thompson resigned in July as a teacher at Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville, about 15 miles east of Pittsburgh. That happened when the investigation began.

Police say Thompson and the girl had sex at school and at other locations between May 2011 and June 2012.

Thompson said he is sorry for his crimes and receiving treatment.
