Fire destroys Gallitzin Township barn, kills pig

ASHVILLE —  A fire early thi morning destroyed a Gallitzin Township barn and killed a pig that was kept inside.

Ashville fire Chief Joseph Racz said the barn, in the 2500 block of Gallitzin Road, belonged to Ted Balzano. The fire broke out just after midnight.

The barn was "well involved" when fire crews arrived, Racz said. Firefighters from Gallitzin, Cresson, Loretto, Lilly and Portage assisted Ashville at the scene.

Racz said additional crews were called to the scene when embers from the fire sparked a brush fire on a nearby hillside.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but is not considered suspicious, Racz said.
