Vandals target CamTran shelters

JOHNSTOWN — At least five CamTran bus stop shelters in Johnstown’s Cambria City and Morrellville areas were vandalized over the weekend.

Clear protective panels were destroyed on structures located by U-Haul, SeniorLIFE, Heritage Discovery Center, Greater Johnstown School District administrative office and Giant Eagle. It is believed the activity took place late Friday or early Saturday.

“This kind of vandalism is just unacceptable,” said CamTran board of directors Chairman Ed Cernic Jr.

No arrest has been made.

“We’d like to catch the person that did this because it will cost us a lot of money,” Cernic said.

Cernic, at this time, believes it was a random act of vandalism, as opposed to a person with a grudge purposely targeting CamTran property.

“I think it was just coincidence. We get it every once in a while,” said the chairman. “I don’t think it was anything directly related to us.”

Johnstown police Chief Craig Foust suspects the damage may have been caused by a BB gun.

The department plans to keep a closer eye on the shelters.

“The problem is it only takes a second to drive by, do the damage and be gone,” Foust said.

CamTran expects to replace the panels within a few weeks.
