Former superintendent loses bid to withdraw plea

JOHNSTOWN — A former western Pennsylvania school superintendent has lost his bid to withdraw a guilty plea to misuse of federal funds intended to expand high-speed Internet access.

Sixty-one-year-old Dennis Bruno, former superintendent of the Glendale School District in Cambria County, entered the plea in 2011 to one count of misappropriation of $49,600.

The (Altoona) Mirror (http://bit.ly/Wh5Xvm ) reports that a federal judge rejected the plea withdrawal request, saying Bruno failed to show that the federal funds were properly applied to extend online service to Glendale Yearound Community.

Bruno argued that he hadn’t “intentionally” misapplied funds but relied on others who told him that the project had been completed. He also said he didn’t know the plea would leave him without his $80,000-plus pension. Bruno is to be sentenced next month.
