This festival will highlight the history of railroading and coal mining in Cresson.
The 16th annual Cresson Area Heritage Days, sponsored by the Cresson Chamber of Commerce, will be held Friday through Oct. 6 along Front Street in Cresson, which will be blocked off to accommodate the activities.
Events will begin with a hobo dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, featuring chili, bread, a cookie and a beverage for about $4.
Free hayrides will be provided by Vale Wood Farms near Loretto.

Entertainers will perform on an outdoor stage on Front Street.
“We’ll have 10 food vendors and more than 60 craft vendors,” said Veronica Harkins, chairwoman of the vendors committee. “People in the community are supportive and come ready for the weather, whether they bring umbrellas or winter coats.”
On Oct. 5, entertainment will start off with Zupe from
11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and continue with a climbing wall from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Shaggy Mountain Farm Petting Zoo from noon to 3 p.m., Unicycle Sam from noon to 3 p.m. and a Johnny and June Carter Cash tribute with Ole 97 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
A children’s carnival will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 5-6, and craft and food vendors will be open from 10 a.m. to
5 p.m. Oct. 5-6.
Food vendors will feature pulled pork, hot sausage, hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, walking taco salads, Reuben sandwiches, haluski, pierogi, funnel cakes, ice cream and candy apples and apple dumplings.
“On Saturday only, there will be a vendor with fresh apples, cider and apple butter,” Harkins said.
Craft vendors will feature leather work, a variety of wood crafting, wreaths, swags and floral arrangements, candles, handmade jewelry, ceramics and doll furniture and clothes.
“We try to improve and make it better,” Harkins said. “Each year, we get new crafters. We have 10 new ones this year.”
On Oct. 6, entertainment will feature the Celtic band Full Kilt from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., an appearance by Diesel Dawg at 12:30 p.m., Charlene’s School of Dance from 1 to 2 p.m. and an Elvis tribute by Brad Crum from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
A car show sponsored by the Portage Cruisers Car Club will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 6.
