Garden Club recognized

— Members of the Garden Club of Johnstown received various awards for their beautification efforts in the city at the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania Convention held in King of Prussia, Montgomery County.

The group earned top honors, the Governor’s Trophy.

First place awards were for the roadside beautification, including perennial gardens and signage, at Route 271 and Barnett Street; a special recognition state award in the fundraiser/special projects category for the club’s annual fundraiser, “Welcome the Holidays;” a historic preservation award for the Wagner Ritter heirloom gardens; and a conservation award.

Second place awards included horticulture therapy and civic achievement for the Johnstown Flood Museum, and honorable mentions were for the yearbook award for clubs with 70-99 members, $50 seed money for the flood museum and $1,000 scholarships for both Brianna Isenberg and Stephanie Walters.

The club also received a certificate of appreciation for furthering the goals set forth by the federation and the National Garden Club Inc.

Members in attendance to receive the awards were Rene Hrescak, Anne Jenkins, Rose Price, Diane Herman and Mary Jo Gardill.
