A Summerhill Township man charged with raping a disabled girl pleaded guilty to lesser charges in Cambria County court on Thursday.
David Eugene Carman Jr., 45, pleaded guilty to one count each of aggravated indecent assault and corruption of minors.
He had been charged by Summerhill Township police in early January with 20 counts of rape of a mentally disabled person; 10 counts each of aggravated indecent assault of a mentally disabled person, indecent assault by force and corruption of minors; and one count each of rape by force, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse by force and aggravated indecent assault without consent. Those charges were dropped in the plea agreement.
Carman is scheduled to be sentenced June 26 and is expected to receive four to eight years in state prison, said his attorney, John Lovette of the county Public Defender’s Office.
Carman, of the 800 block of Cameron Avenue, Beaverdale, was described as a friend of the girl’s family.
Police said they were contacted after the girl, who had been gone for about two hours, failed to return home. They learned she had been at Carman’s house.
The girl, now 16, was molested about 10 times between May and December, police said. She and Carman communicated on Facebook.
While the girl did not testify at Thursday’s hearing, she told the judge in a letter that she has nightmares, can’t sleep and has trust issues.
She has the mental capacity of a 3- or 4-year-old child, authorities said.
Assistant District Attorney Joseph R. Green said Carman automatically was designated as a sexually violent predator because of the nature of the charges. After serving his prison sentence, he will have to keep authorities informed of his whereabouts for the reminder of his life.
Lovette said he will not challenge the assessment at sentencing.
“As soon as he was charged, he admitted to everything,” Lovette said.
Carman remains in Cambria County Prison, where he has been incarcerated since January.
