A 5K race, and possibly a wing cook-off, will be added to this summer’s Miner’s Memorial Day Weekend, its organizers said Tuesday.
The Eureka Coal Heritage Foundation said planning is well under way for the Father’s Day weekend event, which annually lures thousands of visitors to town – and includes a parade, live music, fireworks and a car cruise-in.
“The 5K race will be held to help defray costs for the (Arcadia) Theatre’s costs to change its heating system,” foundation President Sandra Pritt said.
“But we work every year to bring something different to our event.”
An afternoon wing competition at or near Miner’s Park also would be a new addition to the June 14-16 event – but board members said they will have to do their homework to see if it would work, including seeking interest from area bars, restaurants and other vendors.
Meanwhile, an initial schedule of events, including entertainment, has been posted on Eureka’s website, www.echf/ windberpa.org.
Pritt said plenty of volunteers and sponsors are still needed for the event.
