Home residents celebrate Easter

JOHNSTOWN — Bright, colorful tulips decorated The Lutheran Home at Johnstown’s multipurpose room.

Upstairs, a holiday tree was decorated with Easter eggs and purple garland. And hallways were filled with the sound of Easter hymns echoing from an afternoon worship service.

It all meant one thing to Bill Mock.

“Christ has risen,” the Lutheran Home resident said, beaming a smile. “Hallelujah.”

Mock, 90, was one of nearly 20 residents who gathered Sunday afternoon for a service at the Goucher Street home to celebrate the Christian holiday in both prayer and song.

“This is the best part of the year,” Mock said, prompting fellow resident Gene Eppley to add an “Amen.”

Eppley, 95, gave small, hand-made bracelets to his fellow residents earlier in the week.

Holiday-themed activities also kept many residents busy during the week, activity aide Marianne Locher said Sunday, noting Easter movies, egg coloring and an egg hunt with the nursing home’s preschool-aged Growing Years day care were among those on the schedule.

The Lutheran Home’s residents also celebrated with an Easter feast – baked ham, sweet potatoes and lemon pie.

Residents, with hymnals in hand for the afternoon service, sang “In the Garden” while a steady rain fell outside.

That, too, meant something special – that spring is finally arriving, Mock said.

“Another sign of new life,” he said.
